Harris Corporation Supplies Technology to Washington, D.C., Area Broadcasters for Mobile DTV Consumer Showcase

LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2010 (Consumer Electronics Show) - Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, announces ATSC Mobile DTV broadcast support for six local digital TV stations in the Washington, D.C., market. The initiative supports the Mobile DTV Consumer Showcase sponsored by the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC), which begins this month.

Harris has so far supplied its MPH™ platform for ATSC Mobile DTV to five stations:
  • WUSA-DT, a CBS affiliate owned by Gannett Broadcasting
  • WDCA-DT, a FOX owned-and-operated station
  • WPXW-DT, an ION owned-and-operated station
  • WHUT-DT, a PBS member station broadcasting from Howard University
  • WNVC-DT, an independent station owned by MHz Networks
A sixth station, TeleFutura affiliate WFDC-TV (owned by Univision Television Group), will go on the air with Harris MPH equipment following the CES show. All together, Harris MPH equipment will support six of the eight stations participating in the Mobile DTV Consumer Showcase.

"The Open Mobile Video Coalition's Consumer Showcase in Washington will be the first time for everyday viewers to see the remarkable flexibility and robust reception characteristics of ATSC Mobile DTV in action," said Anne Schelle, executive director of the Open Mobile Video Coalition.

"Thanks to the technological leadership of companies like Harris, we'll have consumers receiving up to 20 different programs on handheld phones, netbook computers, mobile digital television sets and other devices," she said. "These shows will be coming from local broadcasters throughout the Washington area. It's the first time that local news, weather and entertainment from ATSC Mobile DTV transmissions will be seen and heard in the hands of real viewers."

The Harris MPH platform integrates into most DTV transmitters. It includes everything that broadcasters need to launch and support one or more ATSC Mobile DTV program streams. The complete solution includes the Harris NetVX™ video networking platform, Synchrony™ mobile networking adapter and Apex M2X™ exciter; as well as signal generation and Electronic Service Guide (ESG) components from Roundbox Corporation.

"Broadcasters using the Harris MPH platform can launch ATSC Mobile DTV programming with a modest investment in equipment and installation time," said Jay Adrick, vice president of broadcast technology, Harris Broadcast Communications. "Harris is well-positioned to help broadcasters achieve deployments and capitalize on potential new revenue opportunities. Plus, consumers will benefit by receiving news, sports and other local program content on the move."
